City did not have one of their brightest soccer days at Port Vale. They were well below their recent form and they were knocked off the top of the table. It was no walkover for Vale however, in an eight goal
thriller of a match. City offered a firm challenge in the second half but with the defence playing much below standard for the first time this season, they conceded five goals through the medium of a spectacular and quality hat trick by Rees, City's man of the match, Exeter made a touch and go issue of their see saw tussle until ten minutes from time. At that point with the score 3-3, Port Vale were pounding at a packed Exeter defence and they went in front with a goal of dubious validity, A player was standing yards offside, A fifth Vale goal in the 88th minute sealed City's fate, but until that late scoring flourish, Exeter despite their out of character display looked set for saving a point,

Of the City forwards Rees was out on his own, though Nicholls was also a force, Calland toiled industriously without reward, it was from the rearguard section that most of City's problems stemmed, Foley and MacDonald were repeatedly outpaced and oliver in particular had an out of touch game.

Match Report 2

In the end the City were somewhat unfortunate to lose by such a big margin, especially as the fourth and fifth goals were disputed, but their defenders were not free from blame and were too prone to panic when the Vale stepped up the pressure.

Port Vale: Jones; Raine, Sproson; Kinsey, Leake, Miles; Jackson, Poole, Wilkinson, Steele, Cunliffe.

Exeter City: Hunter; Foley, MacDonald; Mitchell, Oliver, John; Stiffle, Rees, Calland, Nicholls, Dale.

The three goals which Rees scored was a "hat-trick" in vain, and by their victory Port Vale have knocked Exeter off their perch at the top of the 4th Division and are now themselves the leaders.

South Western  League Cup

SALTASH 2-4 EXETER CITY A

Saltash fail before Exeter rally

Saltash twice took the lead and held it for most of the match before superior play by Exeter took its toll with a lively vely goal-getting rally in the closing sing half-hour. With fresh team changes, including two newly signed players, Saltash were not surprisingly unsettled and failed to click as a team. It was little more than a minute from the start when Saltash took the lead with an opportunist goal by newcomer Chegwyn, who had a good game at outside-right. He ran on to a pass and swivelled around a defender before scoring with a sharp flick into the net. Throughout the first half Exeter pressed strongly. with particularly good left-wing work. But fine play by Saltash full-backs, Jewell and Oliver, backed by Hillson's goal- keeping, held them at bay until a few seconds before the interval. Exeter's inside-left Spurle then had a shot punched over the bar. and he headed home the well placed corner-kick. It was a short-lived equaliser for early in the second half inside-left Cox headed Saltash into the lead again-a fine goal from 10 yards out. Southcott, a skilful 15-year-old Callington Grammar School boy. having his first match with Saltash, came close to increasing the lead and Saltash nad another chance from a penalty award. but Jewell's shot was saved. Then came Exeter's rally. Centre-forward Newell headed the equaliser from close in, and then Exeter went ahead when Atkins drew Hillson out of position and scored. A hard drive by Andrews, which rebounded off an upright into the net, made the game safe for Exeter.
