CITY UNLUCKY TO LOSE CUP TIE WITH BEES.

WINNING GOAL SCORED IN LAST FEW MINUTES.

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 15TH

BRENTFORD 3 EXETER CITY 2.

Exeter City have again made an early exit from the F.A.Cup. They lost rather unluckily in the first round at Brentford this afternoon, by the odd goal in five. A crowd of nearly fifteen thousand twice saw the scores levelled after the City had taken the lead midway through the first half, but about five minutes from the end Rainford got the winner for Brentford. An estimated 1,000 City supporters travelled to Griffin Park today to watch the match, and they made themselves heard when the team trotted out in new colours of tangerine and black shirts and white shorts and socks. Brentford, the home team, wore their usual red and white, the same colours that Exeter wear.

Brentford: Cakebread; Wilson, Horne; Bristow, Dargie, Coote; Heath, Rainford, Francis, Towers, McLeod.

Exeter City: Hunter; Foley, McDonald; Mitchell, Oliver, John; Stiffle, Rees, Calland, Nicholls, Dale.

Referee: Mr N.Hough of Macclesfield.

It was a really hard, tough cup-tie, and although the City lost they can be confident that if they win promotion to Division Three they will do well there next season. Exeter played immaculate football at times and defender marvellously well, and as stated above, were unlucky to lose. Towers levelled the scores five minutes before the interval, Calland having given Exeter the lead in the 25th minute. Francis then put Brentford in front with a good goal, and following this Stiffle was injured in a tackle with McLeod. There was no easing up by Exeter, and 18 minutes from time they were awarded a penalty, from which Mitchell scored, for hand-ball against Dargie. Five minutes from the end Brentford took the lead again when Francis hooked in a ball that bounced off the crossbar, and Rainford, who was standing right in the goalmouth nodded the ball in.

Southern League
RESERVES SHATTERED:
LOSE EIGHT GOALS AT POOLE.

Exeter City Reserves were in terrible form at Poole in their Southern League match today and lost by eight goals (Hunter 3, Gillett 3, Kerr and Ellaway) to one (Atkins).
  • Ellaway, who obtained his team's second goal, was with Exeter four years ago.
