CITY WIN THRILLING DEVON DERBY AT TORQUAY.
TED CALLAND IS CAPTAIN FOR THE DAY.
SATURDAY FEBRUARY 7th
TORQUAY 3 CITY 4.
The 11,500 Torquay and Exeter supporters who flocked to Plainmoor this afternoon were treated to 90 minutes of thrilling football as Devon's two 4th Division clubs battled it out for the second time this season. Their previous encounter, at Exeter, ended in a draw. This time the City made sure of the points with a deserved victory which keeps them well up in the championship race. The excitement began with a first minute goal for the City, who led at half-time by 3-1, The United drew level by the 70th minute but three minutes later the City netted the winner. Judging by the noise of the crowd when the City came out they had as many supporters on the ground as Torquay. Calland, the former Torquay centre-forward, was made captain for the day. He started well enough by winning the toss. One minute later he did even better, by banging in the first goal.
Torquay:- Gill; J.Smith, Graham; Hancock, A.Smith, Johnson; Baxter, Cox, T. Northcott, Bond, Pym.
Exeter:- Hunter; Foley, MacDonald; Mitchell, Oliver, Thompson; Stiffle, Rees, Calland, Nicholls, Dale.
Referee:- Mr D.T.Blues of Richmond, Surrey.
After ten minutes of midfield play Bond scored for Torquay. Graham in the 16th minute held Stiffle back unfairly and Exeter were awarded a free kick. Stiffle took the kick and lobbed the ball into the centre and as it was pushed out Mitchell gained possession and rattled the net with a scorching 20 yards shot to put Exeter in front again. And three minutes before half time Stiffle scored the third goal. The second half was just as exciting as the first had been, with Cox and Bond scoring to bring Torquay level, but Exeter had the final word when Nicholls nodded in Dale's centre in elegant style.
