TWO MORE GOALS FOR CALLAND IN LATEST CITY WIN,
SATURDAY FEBRUARY 21ST:
EXETER CITY 2
CARLISLE UNITED 1.
Before Exeter City kicked off at St James's Park against Carlisle this afternoon the club president, Mr Sidney Thomas, chairman, Mr A.S.Line, and manager Mr Frank Broome, stood at the Well-street entrance where they welcomed the Mayor, Councillor Charles Rew and the Sheriff, Ald. J.G.Warne, who were paying a civic visit. Exeter, who had not been beaten at home this season, fielded their usual team.
Exeter City:- Hunter; Foley, MacDonald; Mitchell, Oliver, Thompson; Stiffle, Rees, Calland, Nicholls, Dale.
Carlisle:- G.Thompson; Brown, Troops; McMillan, Doran, R.Thompson; Mooney, Broadis, Fletcher, Keen, Bond.
Referee:- Mr Smyth of London.
It was obvious that the light ball was going to play tricks in the stiff wind. From a long clearance by Foley the City got a corner in the first minute but the ball was quickly forced away. A high ball into the Carlisle goalmouth in the 30th minute produced the first goal of the game. Nicholls lobbed it in from the left, Rees calmly pushed it through to Calland, who let fly with one of his blistering shots from near the penalty spot. The ball was in the net before Thompson could move. Four minutes after the interval Calland crashed another one of those unstoppable drives past Thompson and the City were well on the way to another victory. Bond got a surprise goal for Carlisle after an hour. Exeter despite their win did not play to their true form, and the strength of the team lay in Calland's sharp-shooting.
SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
POOLE TOWN 1 CITY RESERVES 0.
At Poole this afternoon the home side were soon dangerous and Lobbett and Rutter in turn kept out goal scoring attempts.
Poole:- Palmer; Rickaby, Stevens; Kell, Hall, Mulholland; Kerr, Phillips, Dixon, Bellett, Hunter.
City: Lobbett; Rutter, Whitnall; Butterworth, Rapley, Packer; Robinson, Pulman, Carberry, Birch, Rackley.
When Exeter forced a corner on the left Rackley crossed the ball into the side netting. At the other end Mulholland well placed shot tamely into Lobbett's hands. The winning goal was scored in the 64th minute when Kerr headed in Hunter's centre.
