Match Report 2

THURSDAY 5th MARCH 1959. ERRATIC SHOOTING AT CREWE.

CREWE ALEXANDRA 0,

EXETER CITY 0
Hunter; Foley, MacDonald; Mitchell, Oliver, Thompson; Stiffle, Birch, Calland, Nicholls, Dale,

Attendance 7,092,

Exeter City's attack lacked vitality and drive and only a sterling performance by the defence coupled with quite a lot of erratic shooting by Crewe forwards gave the City a point in a scoreless game. Too much close passing and a failure to open out the play cramped the attack and only in short spells was the Crewe goal menacedEven then there was a woeful lack of shooting power,

Crewe were even greater offenders in this respect. They missed seveal goal scoring chances, They put boundless energy into their work and provided thrills galore in front of the Exeter goal but they could not round off their fierce attacks. A lot of this however, was due to the quick tackling by the City defence ably marshalled by Oliver,

City's forwards were poor by contrast with the defence. Birch and Stiffle provided the livelier flank but there was a lack of cohesion in the line. Crewe were well on top territorially but Hunter saw more shots zoom past his goal than he was called upon to save. An entertaining game that could have been so much better with more forward displays from both teams.
