Match 33
14th March 1959
York City (H)

Southern League
Bedford Town (a)

SATURDAY MARCH 14TH

EXETER CITY 0 YORK CITY 2.

CITY LAPSES GIVE YORK TWO POINTS: WRONG TACTICS USED.

Exeter City and York, rivals for promotion to the Third Division, began their match at St James's Park this afternoon knowing that a win for either side would be worth virtually four points. The Northerners were all out, too, to get revenge for Exeter's win at York in October, their first home defeat of the season. Exeter kicked off before a crowd of over 9,000, and Dale and Calland between them worked the ball down the left wing. Nicholls met the centre, but it was turned over the line for a corner which Forgan punched away.

Exeter City:- Hunter; Foley, MacDonald; Mitchell, Oliver, Thompson; Stiffle, Rees, Calland, Nicholls, Dale.

York City: Forgan; Ramsey, Howe; Patterson, Jackson, Mollat; Hughes, Tait, Farmer, Wragg, Twissell.

With only seconds to go before half-time Tait found himself on the edge of the City's penalty area and he lobbed a long shot into the top of the net to put York a goal up. Despite being under almost continuous pressure in the second half it was York who got a goal when in the 56th minute Twissell intercepted Foley's back pass and slammed the ball past Hunter. The visitors from York can thank their defence for being the second team to win at Exeter this season. The City had at least 70 per-cent of the attacking, but too often they tried the wrong tactics of using a high ball against a tall defence, but could claim some bad luck with the run of the ball. And neither of York's two goals should have been scored, both being the direct result of defensive errors.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
BEDFORD 5
EXETER CITY RESERVES 1.

At Bedford the City's defence was soon in trouble and Holehouse only just recovered in time after fumbling a back pass from Rutter. Worse happened 20 minutes later when Rutter's back pass to Holehouse went into the net for Bedford's first goal.

Bedford:- Hawkesworth; Smith, Thompson; Britton, Craig, Murray; Newman, Easton, Duquemin, Cogsden, Robinson.

City: Holehouse; Rutter, Whitnall; Butterworth, Rapley, Packer; Robinson, Pulman, Hill, Carberry, Rackley.

Further goals were added by Easton and Mewnam in the first half and by Robinson and Newman afterwards. Hill scored for the Reserves.
