Match 34
17th March 1959
Walsall (a)
WALSALL 3 EXETER CITY 0 AT FELLOWS PARK.
TUESDAY MARCH 17TH:
EASY WIN FOR WALSALL.
EASY WIN FOR MEDIOCRE WALSALL.
WALSALL 3.
EXETER CITY 0.
Exeter City were beaten by ten men and after this display something has to be done to the City attackFor attack is the last word to describe the City forward line. They had no fight, no punch, no thrust, nothing and a very mediocre Walsall defence was able to brush them out of the penalty area without hardly any resistance at all, The game was played in a terrific wind which did not allow a lot of good football but the City had the advantage of it in the first half and should have turned the advantage into a couple of goals. When City turned on their football ability they cut a moderate Walsall to shreds in midfield but once on the edge of the penalty area it was all over.
Davies shot Walsall into a 30th minute lead, he looked at least a yard offside but even so that ball should have been cut out before it reached him, With the wind against them, City were obviously in for a struggle in the second half and Walsall scored a second goal seven minutes from time when Faulkner beat Hunter after passing Foley and Oliver. A minute later Taylor made it 3-0, Walsall played out 75 minutes of the game with only ten effective players as left back Guthridge injured a knee and was hobbling on the right wing after that
The City attack was devoid of fight in this re-arranged match, and it became an easy win for a moderate Walsall team.
