SATURDAY MARCH 28th 1959
EXETER CITY 3 PORT VALE 4.
HUNTER INJURED AND CARRIED OFF ON STRETCHER.
At half-time in this promotion battle at St James's Park Port Vale were two goals ahead. Then the City's hopes soared at they netted three times to take the lead within the next half hour. In a hard fought game Port Vale equalised in the 80th minute and six minutes later scored again to give them both points.
City: Hunter; Foley, MacDonald; Butterworth, Oliver, Thompson; Stiffle, Mitchell, Calland, Nicholls, Rees.
Port Vale:- Hancock; Raine, Sproson; Kinsey, Leake, Miles; Jackson, Steele, Wilkinson, Poole, Cunliffe.
This was a terrific battle, which purely on the run of the play the City should have won. They were unlucky to be two goals down at the interval and they fought back very well in the second half. Hunter was injured in a collision with Jackson and had to be carried off on a stretcher two minutes from the end.
The order of scoring was:-
- Poole (18 minutes),
- Steele (43),
- Rees (47),
- Stiffle (60),
- Calland (75),
- Sproson (80),
- Steele (86).

Dartford v Exeter City Reserves
Huckstepp's 50 goals
Dartford 3 Exeter Res. 1
Unbeaten on their own ground for almost six months. Dartford hit back after being a goal down When centre-forward Huckstepp gave them a 2-1 lead his team- mates showered congratulations upon him for it was his 50th goal in all games this season. Strong in defence and enter- prising in attack, Exeter took the lead in the 51st minute with a great 30-yard goal from inside-left Birch, but Goodfellow put Dartford level 14 minutes later. Then Huckstepn headed through to put Dartford ahead, and four minutes from the end the same player netted again.

Newquay 2. Exeter 0
Surely no Newquay side has ever missed so many chances as that which played Exeter at Mount Wise on Saturday. It might have been almost in sheer desperation that the referee at last awarded a penalty, but they missed even that. With five changes in the selected side, Exeter had little chance of standing up to Newquay's present form. They opened well, but after ten minutes it was Newquay practically all the way. The two Exeter backs, Clemence and Maunder, and particularly Berry. who played a superb game in goal. were also largely responsible for Newquay's low scoring. Newquay played a well-organised and always dangerous forward game. Iles was right back on form and the forwards were continuously fed with opportunities which they just could not convert. Sterne set the non-scoring pace after five minutes by missing a certainty and a few moments later Slater put in a beautiful shot from an indirect free-kick which Berry just managed to touch over the bar. Newquay kept up the pressure in the second half, but bad shooting and worse luck kept them out until just five minutes from the end. Then Hawkey took a beautiful run. beating four Exeter players and passed to Slater who gave Berry no chance. From the centre the Newquay forwards went straight back with a concerted rush and Tony Pollard had added the second less than a minute later.
