Match 43
15th April 1959
Crystal Palace (h)
WEDNESDAY APRIL 15TH 1959:
CITY 3 CRYSTAL PALACE 1.
EXETER CITY RETURN TO FORM AT ST JAMES'S PARK.
After several mediocre displays Exeter City were back on form with a fairly comfortable victory over Crystal Palace on Wednesday. The Palace, who held Exeter to a draw at Selhurst Park not long ago, were only really in the game for about fifteen minutes. The rest of the time they were baffled and beaten pointless by the 100 per-cent team of City fighters whose fast and skilful passing cut up their defence to ribbons time and again. There were 8,352 spectators.
Exeter City: Lobbett; Foley, Whitnall; Mitchell, Oliver, Thompson; Stiffle, Rees, Calland, Nicholls, Dale.
Crystal Palace: Rouse; Choules, Noakes; McNichol, Evans, Long; Brett, Summersby, Deakin, Byrne, Colfar.
Graham Rees, who was the City's best forward with his non-stop effort and persistance, led the way with the goalscoring with a perfectly headed lob into the net over the outstretched arms of Rouse. After several near misses by Exeter a penalty was awarded as Evans handled to stop Dale going through, but the spot kick by Mitchell travelled several yards wide of the target. Nicholls however soon made it 2-nil with a cracking shot and Stiffle added the third goal with 25 minutes remaining for play.
