EXETER CITY 3
(Stiffle, Mitchell, Nicholls)
HARTLEPOOL'S UNITED 0

Played at St James's Park, April 25th.

City thrashed Hartlepool with only ten men for most of the match, Calland was injured in ten minutes and hobbled off for good after 20 minutes with a badly strained knee ligament, Mitchell was magnificent in his centre forward role, he fought, harrassed, his ball distribution was faultless and he scored a goal, Every City man played well, their football was surprisingly good and only the brilliance of HHartlepool goalkeeper Dakley stopped his side suffering a crushing defeat Exeter went ibto a 30 minute lead after Oakley partly blocked a shot from Rees and the ball ran loose to Stiffle to shoot into the net, In the 55th minute City went two upButterworth's pass was met by Mitchell who fired home an unstoppable shot from 16 yards. 3 minutes from time Mitchell gave Nicholls the chance to score from close rangeThe main thing was that the City forwards really showed some life at last with every man going for 90 minutes, City are far from home and dry in the promotion stakes, but if they keep playing like this, then they will be in the champagne stakes on Thursday night and Shrewsbury will be tring again next season.

Defending most of the game

Exeter City 5, St. Austell 0

St. Austell had to defend for most of this game and rarely looked like scoring. Exeter's superiority was complete, but although they scored five times, their forwards missed many chances in front of goal. Exeter goalkeeper Barney Singleton got some mud in an eye and had to leave the field for a few minutes for attention.

Exeter's goals were scored by Peter Bennett (3) and Mike Cleverley (2).
