Played at the Gay Meadow,
THURSDAY 30th APRIL 1959.

ONLY A MIRACLE CAN SEND CITY UP NOW.

Gay Meadow, Shrewsbury was a sad sad spot for Exeter City, it had probably become a burial spot City's promotion hopes. A Rowley hat trick gave Shrewsbury a 3-0 win and now they are just a point behin City with one game to play at home to WatfordThere is some small hope for Exeter but not muchIt wil take a near miracle for Watford to win as Shrewsbury were leading 5-2 when the match was abandoned las week with 12 minutes to go. Shrewsbury were two goals in front by the 43rd minute and City by then must have realised that the had a hopeless task in front of them. They had been defending from almost the kick off. It took them 2 minutes before they managed a shot. Nicholls effort going wideRowley nodded home the opening goal in th 36th minute and seven minutes later scored again from the pnalty spot, after Butterworth had handled,

Five minutes into the second half Rowley completed his hat trick pouncing on a bad clearance fro Thompson, it was all over for City. This was not a good Exeter performance. They tried hard but the attac lacked punch and accuracy. The defence played hard but not as well as usual and City generally could no pull out their top form that would have beaten Shrewsbury.
