United lose the cup 2-1

HOLDERS Torquay United lost their Devon Professional Cup Final at Exeter last night despite a fine game by goalkeeper Mervyn Gill, Exeter City included three League team players, but delayed their winning goal until five minutes from the end. It came from club captain Arnold Mitchell, playing at centre-forward. Exeter won 2-1. and so avenged their defeat in the final at Plainmoor last year.

Exeter enjoyed far the better of the match territorially, and took the lead when David Robinson supplied a pass for winger Bob Rackley to score. Then a defensive slip let United centre-forward Gerald Knapman through to equalise. United's defence came under heavy pressure afterwards, but Gill and full- backs John Smith and Harry Smith held out until Mitchell raced on to a long pass and scored. It was an entertaing match-and some reward for Exeter now that their pro- motion hopes seem to be vanishing

Guildford City Could Have Taken Two Points

If Guidiford had taken all their chances they could have won this game by a comfortable three-goal margin. Though their midfield football was good and they often worked the ball well enough to leave Exeter's defence standing, their fin. ishing was terrible and they played as if they had never heard of the offside law (writes our Exeter correspondent).

Guildford got a corner straight from the kick-off, but though Exeter were pinned in their own penalty area for the first five minutes, they scored as soon as they got sway, through centre-forward Carberry. Almost at once Guildford pushed them back on the defensive again. But several times City were stopped be- cause two or more of their men stoor! yards offside while the ball was being worked up for them or because of lack of opportunism.

Two crosses from Gunning should have been turned into goals-hint went untouched across Exeter's goalmouth: then Edwards made a brilliant 30-yard dribble clean through Exeter's defence and s shot wide from six yards. In fact it looked as if City would never score, and when they did it was a gift. e Centre-forward Fullick pounced on a bad back pass by left-balf Cleverley in the 24th minute. After this there were a few misses by each side but no more goals, and a draw was just about a fair result to this un-F inspiring came that really had the end of the season touch
