EXHIBITION GAME
Exeter City out-shine Casual Argyle
Plymouth Argyle 3, Exeter City 6
Soccer fans who visited Falmouth Town's ground on Saturday to watch the exhibition game between Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City had their share of excitement and nine good goals to talk about. Arranged by Falmouth Rotary Club in aid of Cornish charities, the game produced a shock win for Exeter-a win they thoroughly deserved, too.
Argyle were without star inside- forward Jimmy Gauld, and Terry Dann (Penzance) deputised. Plymouth's casual play and hesitancy near goal contributed to their downfall, and once Exeter took the lead they never lost it. Centre-forward Carter opened the scoring for Plymouth after 12 minutes. but outside-left Rackley equalised in the 23rd. Two goals by centre-forward Hill gave Exeter a 3-1 interval lead. One minute after the re-start Govan reduced Plymouth's arrears. but Exeter were undeterred, and Hill scored twice to put his team 5-2 ahead. Stiffle added No. 6. and Anderson got a late goal for Plymouth. Outstanding in the Exeter team was goalkeeper Lobbett and manager Broome. who, despite his increased weight and lack of match practice. never wasted a ball.
The teams were presented before the game to the Deputy Mayor of Falmouth (Mr. B. J. E. Belcher), the Mayor of Penryn (Mr. E. L. Jenkin), and Mr. Ted Waters (president of Falmouth Rotary Club).
City: Lobbett; Foley, MacDonald; Butterworth, Packer, Whitnall; Stiffle, Broome, Hill, Mitchell, Rackley.
Plymouth Argyle:- Barnsley; Robertson, Bellett; Dougall, Wyatt, Casey; Anderson, Dann, Carter, Rowley, Govan.
