Biographical Text
Kgaogelo 'Kegs' Chauke, a midfielder, joined Exeter City on a season-long loan from Southampton in July 2022 during which time he represented South Africa at under-23 level. Soon after returning to Southampton, Kegs moved to Burton Albion on a permanent deal.
Born in South Africa, but with non-international appearances for England under-18s under his belt, Kegs had played youth football at Thatcham Town before joining Southampton as a fourteen-year-old. After becoming a scholar/trainee in 2019, Kegs signed his first professional deal in January 2020 and made his Saints debut in an FA Cup tie against Shrewsbury Town in January 2021 which proved to be his only first-team appearance in addition to playing for the club’s under-21 team in the EFL Trophy.
Kegs made his league debut for Exeter City as a 76th minute substitute against Port Vale on 6 August 2022 and scored his first goal against Newport County in the EFL Trophy on 30 August 2022. He followed this up with another EFL Trophy goal against the under-21s of Southampton, his parent club, on 4 October 2022. Making his first league start against Sheffield Wednesday on 10 December 2022, Kegs later missed three games in March 2023 after being selected to play for South Africa U23s in qualifiers for an AFCON tournament. He duly made his debut as a substitute against Congo on 24 March 2023.
After appearing in City's final game of the season - against Morecambe on 7 May - Kegs returned to Southampton and moved to Burton Albion on a permanent contract at the same time as Jamal Blackman, Jake Caprice and Rekeem Harper who he had played alongside for Exeter. Arriving at his new club on a two-year deal, he played just five league games during his first term and none beyond January.
