Right from the word go, City hit Brentford with all the speed and soccer skill they could muster and Dale's third minute goal was just a sample of what was to come, The City moved, played and thought like a team and they got the result. It was a good, solid, convincing win, Only once did City look to be in trouble, that was in the second half when they seemed to ease up, the defence booted the ball anywhere, and made a mistake which enabled Francis to score, Against this one mistake must be counted dozens of brilliant defensive moves, City's second goal came from Wilkinson, the referee saying that his shot which rebounded down off the crossbar definitely crossed the line before Rees nodded it in, Rees harried and harrased through out, he was City's outstanding forward but if it came to handing out the marks, the rest of the forwards wouldn't be far behind him, Stiffle made the first two City goals and got the last himself three minutes from time,

Match Report 2

Exeter City 3 Brentford 1
Attendance: 13,000

Right from the word go, Exeter City hit Brentford with all the speed and football skill they could muster, and Gordon Dale's third minute goal was just a sample of what was to come. The City moved, played and thought like a team and they got the result. It was a good, solid, convincing win. Only once did City look to be in trouble. That was in the second half when they seemed to ease up. The defence cleared the ball anywhere and made a mistake which enabled Francis to score. Against this one mistake must be counted dozens of brilliant defensive moves. City's second goal came from Jack Wilkinson, the referee saying that his shot which rebounded down off the crossbar definitely crossed the line before Graham Rees nodded it in. Rees harried and harassed throughout. He was City's outstanding forward, but if it came to handing out the marks, the rest of the forwards would not have been far behind him. There were long periods of the game in which City were well on top and Brentford were very much second best as the visitors were unable to match the slick football being played by the Grecians, which was greatly appreciated by the large St James' Park crowd. Winger Nelson Stiffle made the first two City goals and then capped a fine performance by netting the third three minutes from time to ensure a place in the third round of the F.A. Cup.

City team: Alan Jones, Theo Foley, Les MacDonald, Arnold Mitchell, Ken Oliver, Jimmy Thompson, Nelson Stiffle, Graham Rees, Jack Wilkinson, Andy Micklewright, Gordon Dale.

Brentford team: Cakebread, Horne, Coote, Bristow, Livingstone, Goundry, Parsons, Rainford, Francis, Towers, Hale.

Kidderminster 1-0 Exeter City Reserves

Kidderminster: Roberts; Lovesey, Rubridge: Chapman. Simmons, Moss: Shuck. Brennan, Burns. Blackwell, Smith.

Exeter: Lobbett; Butterworth, Whitnall; Williams, Rapley, Cleverley; Atkins, Bennett, Calland, Birch, Rackley,

Referee: W. Williams (Hereford).

The Harriers took on Exeter with the confidence of having won their previous big game, but they could do nothing right in the first half-hour. Simmons (twice) and Rubridge cleared off the line when goals looked certain.

The attack could not get going and when it did Burns missed the sort of chance with his head that invariably means a goal. Then Brennan flashed a free-kick across the face of the goal, but Blackwell just failed to connect with his outstretched foot. After 35 minutes Harriers lost Blackwell who was carried off holding his foot after going down in a tackle.
