Exeter City proved they could squeeze enough talent from themselves to beat the best in the Fourth Division. There was nothing lucky or haphazard about the way they hammered promotion chasing Carlisle United.
City started brightly, shots raining in from all angles, but somehow Carlisle held out and it was a goalless first half. Many supporters expected City to fall away in the second period, but how wrong they were. Exeter took no notice of Carlisle's excellent defensive record and got them into a terrible tangle. Everyone in the team played his part.
The goals came through Eric Welsh (50th minute) and Keith Harvey, a minute later with a penalty. Brian Jenkins added two more in the 60th and 70th minutes.
They thoroughly deserved them, for it was good to see a City side on top form, and the way they played push and run football was a delight to watch.
