Match 01
22nd August 1959
Northampton (h)

EXETER CITY 1 (Micklewright) NORTHAMPTON TOWN (Leck)

Played at St James's Park,

SATURDAY 22nd AUGUST 1959.

CITY MISS CHANCES THROUGH POOR FINISHING.

It was not a brilliant start to the season and City could have won in the first half, but remembering that it was the start of the season and remembering all the teething troubles that the opening game must bring it was a fair resultCity got off to a bad start when Mitchell missed a ninth minute penalty for Claypole's foul on Rees, and though they did settle down to attack ten times to Northampton's once, as half time approached it became increasingly obvious that City's finishing was not up to par. They were creating chances and missing chances.

After a slow start, new signing Micklewright came more into the picture, he put City into a 44th minute lead with a hard low shot past Brewer after a nice one two move with Calland. So City started the second half with all the advantages, but this time they found Northampton a different proposition and after slicing through the City in midfield Leck equalised in the 49th minute.

For 15 minutes or so City found themselves in trouble. The defence played well enough to finally force their way out of danger and back onto something like a level footing. In the last ten minutes City looked as if they might get the deciding goalbut Dale, Micklewright and Rees all had eforts saved by Brewer,
