Ashford (a)
EXETER CITY 2 (Micklewright 2) WATFORD 0
Played at St James's Park,.
SATURDAY 29th AUGUST 1959.
WATFORD KEEP CITY RIGHT ON THEIR TOES.
City's first Fourth Division win of the season and a nice comfortable sounding result, but until Micklewright pounced to score twice in four minutes midway through the first half, it was anything but comfortable for Exeter City, Watford started smoothly, they bottled City into their own half and kept pushing and probing accurately forward all the time. The City defence kept out everything and slowly they began to support the forward colleagues,
Best of the City forwards were Stiffle and Birch, Stiffle was easing the pressure with his bursts along the wing and had a part in both goals, Birch was playing some of his best football since joining the club last season,
Even in the second half Watford were far from beaten and Exeter had to keep on their toes all the time, City moved with much more confidence after the interval and began to look worth their win, Birch, twnkling and darting everywhere was making plenty of attacking openings and in defence City were cooler and constructive, Whitnall hobbled out of the game shortly before the end, S. L.
