Match 05
5th September 1959
Oldham Athletic (a)
OLDHAM ATHLETIC 1 (Stringfellow)
EXETER CITY 2
(Calland, Rees)
Played at Boundary Park,
SATURDAY 5th SEPTEMBER 1959.
A HAPPY RETURN VISIT FOR THOMPSON.
With Thompson acting captain for the day on his return to his former club Oldham Athletic, City achieved a fine victory over a poor side led by former City player Ray John, Exeter virtually won the game in the first half with goals from Calland and Rees and in the second period it was just a question whether City's tough defence could resist the Oldham pressure. They did it with credit, Tight covering prevented Oldham getting one clean shot at goal in the whole 45 minutes and even when they were awarded an indirect free kick just five yards from the City goalline, Oldham did not break the City wall of defence, Calland had put Exeter into an 8th minute lead before Stringfellow scored an equaliser, It seemed it would be all square at the interval until Rees produced a wonderful effort, Stiffles chest high centre came to Rees on the corner of the penalty box, with an acrobatic leap and spin, he hit a first time shot into the top corner of the Oldham net, The Rees goal as enough to give the side both well earned points in a dour and for the most part unexciting game. Thompson had his name taken, as did Spurdle following a clash between the two players.
