Match 08
17th September 1959
Chester (h)

EXETER CITY 2 (Micklewright 2) CHESTER 0.

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 17TH
AT ST JAMES'S PARK.

Exeter City won for the fifth time out of eight matches, which is good going, but although the defence came through the latest game without complaint only Stiffle and Micklewright of the forwards. were fully effective. Six of Exeter's ten goals this season have been got by Micklewright, the new signing from Swindon Town.

BOTH POINTS BUT NOT SO EASY FOR CITY.

EXETER CITY 2,
Jones; Foley, MacDonald; Mitchell, Oliver, Harvey; Stiffle, Birch, Micklewright, Thompson, Rees,
CHESTER 0.

Scorers Exeter City Micklewright 2,

Attendance 7,555,

It was far from easy for City, but they got away to a good start with a goal in two minutes, Stiffle's corner was cleared back to him and he passed inside to Micklewright who scored from three yards, For the next 15 minutes City were struggling to get out of their own half, snappy Chester were playing all the football but with Oliver and Mitchell back in the City side the defence was too tough for them to crack, Chester continued to trade attack for attack until half time. In the 71st minute, a two man move resulted in City's second goal, Jones making his debut in the League cleared the ball well into Chester's half and Micklewright brought it under control, went through and scored with a 25 yard shot, City had one more scoring attempt before the end, when Birch hit a terrific shot against the bar, City did not have things all their own way by any means but they won thanks to some fine opportunism by Micklewright and some first class defensive play by Mitchell, Foley and Oliver, It was a match played by two sides with the same trouble, no finish to their football.
