CITY WON BUT NO MORALE BOOSTER.
City won two badly needed points, but it wasn't the big morale booster that it could have been for the team. It showed up some weaknesses in a City department that has not been criticised for some time, the defence, & scrappy start in which Exeter vere on top and Bradford looked decidedly panicky ended with Thompson firing City into the lead after Dale had passed to him.
Seven minutes later City scored again, Birch slipped the ball to Rees and his first time shot flew past Hough, City changed over well in command and set for adding several goals to their tally, but it was but to be, as Bradford bustled their way back into the game.
The City defence struggled and conceded a goal, Allan scoring although he looked blatantly offside, After this the game sank to the dregs of Fourth Division football, with the City defenders kicking anywhere and Bradford's forverds not quite sure what to do. The ball was going to nd fro like a yo-yo. 15 minutes from the end Exeter started to come back into the game. Rees got a second goal, a good little solo run and a clip over Hough's head to make the points safe for a not too convincing City.
Match Summary
The highlight of this game was Jimmy Thompson's grand goal, scored with a thumping shot from 25 yards out. It was better than the one hammered in by Gordon Dale against Walsall on Saturday, and quite the best on the St James's Park field this season.Bradford played up strongly in the second half and looked as if they might save a point until Rees with the last of his two goals put the issue beyond doubt 15 minutes from the end.
