Match 16
14th October 1959
Crewe Alexandra ( a)
CREWE ALEXANDRA (J.Jones) 1
EXETER CITY (Bennett) 1.
WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 14TH AT GRESTY-ROAD,
ATTENDANCE 11,000.
Only a strong late rally by the home side prevented the City taking full points at Crewe and avenging last week's defeat.
Before the season's record crowd of over eleven thousand Crewe were strong favourites after last week's performance at Exeter, and the City created a big surprise by taking the initiative and holding it for the greater part of the game.
Crewe:- K.Jones; Sutherland, Campbell; Kelly, Barnes, Warhurst; Mercer, Riley, Llewellyn, Keery, J.Jones.
City: Lobbett; Foley, MacDonald; Harvey, Oliver, Thompson; Micklewright, Rees, Bennett, Birch, Dale.
Referee Mr J.Parkinson of Blackburn.
Exeter were faster on the ball, more methodical, and not reluctant to shoot whenever possible. Bennett, making his Fourth Division debut, put Exeter ahead with a picture goal after only seven minutes. Taking a pass from Dale, he swivelled past Barnes and fired home a scorching shot into the top of the net. A great rally by Crewe in the last half hour J.Jones beat both the Exeter backs and goalkeeper to run the ball into the net for the equalising goal.
