SATURDAY DECEMBER 12th 1959

DONCASTER 0 EXETER CITY 1.

FIRST VISIT TO THE DONCASTER ROVERS GROUND SUCCESSFUL.

The play in the first meeting between the two sides never reached a high standard, in fact it was often drab, but all the good football in the match was provided by City. Their superiority over a mediocre Doncaster side was so marked that it seemed almost inexusable that City did not win more easily, The only goal of the game came after 25 minutes when Nimmo failed to hold a full blooded drive by Mitchell and Rees was left with a simple touch to put the ball into the net. With a little more steadiness in front of goal, City would have had many more goals, for their forwards had the ability to carve up the Doncaster defence at will, but the shooting was too often inaccurate, although Micklewright twice hit a post, City were particularly dominant at halfback where Mitchell and Thompson subdued the Doncaster forward line, The small crowd while condoning City's poor finishing but admiring their undoubted skill grew more and more exasperated at the ineptness of their own team and many never stayed until the end, they rightly thought the result was a forgone conclusion long before the end,"

Summary

Exeter City got two very useful points from their first visit to the Doncaster Rovers' ground at Belle Vue. They won by the only goal of the game but their superiority was greater than this suggests. Rees, who continues to be Exeter's most consistent forward, scored the winning goal after 25 minutes' play. Mitchell ran clean through the home defence, and when his shot was parried by Nimmo the City inside right was on hand to tap the ball into an empty net from a yard's range.

Southern League

Exeter City Res. v Trowbridge Town

Former Exeter City inside forward Eddie Murphy just didn't have any luck when he played against his old club as Trowbridge left-winger and skipper for the day. He saw left-back McCormack put the ball into his own net in the third minute; then when his side were back in the game with a chance he missed an easy goal, and saw two other shots kicked off the goal-line by Exeter's backs. McCormack's slip shook Trowbridge, and it took them half an hour to get back on level terms. Even then they wouldn't have scored but for a bad defensive slip by Exeter, which Mawditt pounced on to make the equaliser for Lambden. The game had never reached any great footballing heights. Trowbridge improved on the change-over, but they were still out of luck when they broke through Exeter's defence. Baker pulled a good ball back for Murphy, but he hit it inches wide from two yards out. Two shots beat Exeter goalkeeper Lobbett, but each was kicked off the line by a full-back. The game looked all set for a drab draw, but in the last 15 minutes Exeter pulled through with a two-goal burst from right-winger Atkins and inside-right Hill to give them the points and help them to go above Trowbridge in the Southern League table.
Chilvers played well for Trowbridge and could not be blamed for any of the goals. In the visitors' forward line wingers Murphy and Mawditt were the two liveliest and most dangerous attackers. Trowbridge did not look like promotion candidates, however.
