COBBLERS GET LATE EQUALISER.
Exeter City deserved to have taken both points from their match at the County Cricket Ground, Northampton, but after they had taken the lead in the second half Kane ran on to a centre from Mills and put the ball into the net as Jones came out. It was cold and raining slightly as the teams ran out on to a pitch that was saturated and strewn with sawdust in many parts.
Northampton:- Brewer; Claypole, Patterson; Cooke, Gale, Bowen; Griffin, Kane, Mills, Ward, Olah.
Exeter City: Jones; Foley, MacDonald; Mitchell, Oliver, Thompson; Stiffle, Rees, Wilkinson, Micklewright, Dale.
The Cobblers were lucky to get a point from this game with the goal snatched near the end. They had given the City some trouble in the last 20 minutes, but generally Exeter had been the better football ing side and were worth two points. Calland Shoots City Ahead At Newton
Ted Calland at inside-left was in the Exeter City team which visited Newton Abbot Spurs in the South-Western League. In appalling conditions the Exeter side, with six professionals, were much faster on the ball and played good positional football. Several times Exeter were in possession of the home half, the Newton defence being badly at fault with their marking. Calland, with a hard ground shot, following a fine solo run put Exeter ahead in the sixth minute and in the 17th a defensive blunder left the home goal open and in trying to kick off the line Bradley scored an own goal,
Half-time: 0-2
In the second half Calland added three more goals and Stockell two.
Result:
Newton Abbot Spurs 0-7 Exeter City
WEDNESDAY 23rd DECEMBER 1959.
NO MAJOR POLICY CHANGES AT PRESENT.
Exeter City manager Frank Broome denied there was any truth in the suggestion by a National newspaper that City were considering an number of major sweeping changes, The suggestion was made that City eight cut their playing staff from 30 to 15, That they might withdraw the reserve side from the Southern League and apply for membership of the Western League and that they might abandon their third team altogether
