Match 32
26th January 2010
Carlisle (h)
Tuesday 26th January 2010
League One
Exeter City 2 Carlisle United 3
Attendance: 4,106
With temperatures hovering around zero, supporters needed something hearty to warm them up. But it would have to come from the tea hut as precious little was coming from the pitch during the opening exchanges.
With ten minutes to go, and with neither side really having tested either keeper, Carlisle made an incisive break to take the lead. Kevan Hurst sped down the right and whipped in a first time cross from deep and Anyinsah showed great awareness to dart in front of Matt Taylor to glance a neat header into the corner from six yards out via the far post giving Jones little chance and putting the visitors 1-0 up.
Seconds before the break a free kick was crossed in deep past the far post where the unmarked Richard Keogh was on hand to knock it back across the goalmouth. Amidst a gaggle of defenders Anyinsah was once again sharpest, poking home from a couple of feet out to give Carlisle a 2-0 half time lead.
With pressure constantly building, a City goal was almost inevitable in the second half, and in the 80th minute they did indeed pull one back. A cross towards Barry Corr from the left was drilled towards goal and blocked by a defender, but only as far as Adam Stansfield just outside the box who promptly smashed it straight back whence it came and into the back of the net to bring City right back into the game.
City then equalised in the final minute when Ryan Harley crashed home a loose ball after good work out on the right by Richard Logan. But City's unlikely celebrations were short lived as straight from the kick off Carlisle got the winner.
Substitute Offiong curled a low shot round Jones towards the far post. Equally inexplicably it hit the inside of the post and rebounded straight back to Offiong who made no mistake second time round planting the ball into the same corner to give the visitors all three points.
City team: Paul Jones; Steve Tully; Richard Duffy; Matthew Taylor; Scott Golbourne; Ryan Harley; Bertie Cozic (Barry Corr); Alex Russell; Liam Sercombe; Adam Stansfield; Marcus Stewart (Richard Logan)
Carlisle United team: Collin; Keogh; Livesey; Harte; Horwood; Hurst; Kavanagh; Thirlwell; Clayton; Robson; Anyinsah
