Exeter City could hardly have a better start to their home matches than this one. The match contained everything the fans wanted. It started with the City getting well on up and then scoring two goals in the first nine minutes, went on with quick man - to man football that left Chesterfield flat-footed, and though there was a spell in the second when Exeter relaxed and had to do a bit more in defence, it finally proved that the 1961-62 team has fight, pace, and cleverness. The time Exeter proved that they could fight back was when Carter, who had scored two goals in the first half, collided with Powell twelve minutes after the interval. Off for treatment for 15 minutes, he came back limping on the right wing with his left leg heavily bandaged, and then went off again ten minutes later. So the City played almost the whole of the second half a man short. The star of the match was Jenkins, a sturdy little left winger who looks to be the pick of the new signings.
