As Alan Jones Walked off the pitch at Chesterfield on Monday he must have wondered just how much he was expected to get through during the course of 90 minutes to make up for the failings of his colleagues. Jones and Wilson spared no effort, but it was not Exeter's night, Rees, Gordon, and Blue all squandering chances which might have brought their team back into the game, and the general lack of all-round spirit among the City players did not help matters. In the opening stages, with Gordon and Carter holding their line together well, Exeter look capable of getting the all important first goal, and Gordon was unlucky to have a dangerous shot from the penalty line deflected by Blakey. Chesterfield's first goal was somewhat fortunate, because the shot was sliced instead of kicked straight, but the mis-hit ball deceived Jones and found the right hand corner of the net. On the other hand the second goal, by Lunn, was a well taken shot following a dazzling move on the right by Havenhand and Lovie.
