In an entertaining first half Rochdale gained a three goals lead over their visitors from Devon. After the interval the home side seemed content to keep the City from scoring without adding to their own tally. Although Exeter in this period were often dangerous, they toiled in vain, for they were unable to get the ball past Burgin.
Burgin in fact displayed the sort of form which brought him into prominence in his Sheffield United days, when he became renowned as one of the best 'keepers in the First Division and at one time on the short list for English International honour. And the Rochdale team has been unchanged for all five games of this season, the first time this has happened since the club came into the Football League in 1921. They are now third in the League table and playing at left half for them these days is the former Exeter City captain Jimmy Thompson. Right to the end Exeter continued to fight hard for a goal, and it was only Burgin, with two brilliant saves from Carter and Jenkins in the last minute, that stopped them.
