Exeter City, although beaten 2-1, helped to provide one of the best Fourth Division games ever seen in York, and not many of the 9,000 spectators would have complained if they taken a point. Exeter not only set up a fast pace, but maintained it all through the 90 minutes. They made excellent use of their wingers, and with Carter and Blue working energetically in the middle there was little relaxation or rest for the York rearguard. Neither was there much for Exeter when the York forwards swung into action, and the outcome was a fluctuating struggle with both the goalkeepers constantly in action. York gained their narrow win, which took them to the top of the divisional table, mainly because they were a bit more penetrative in front of goal. They were always ready to shoot, and they had a sparkling left-wing pair in Gould and Pierce. Exeter's best chance came when Blue crossed the ball to Carter, who headed wide from five yards. Exeter's penalty kick was awarded near the end against Boyes for hands.
