A goal in a thousand by skipper Glen Wilson assured Exeter City of two points. The City had been a goal down after 27 minutes and drawn level in the 40th minute, before Wilson got that goal in the second half. This golden goal was a remarkable one, and of the sort not often seen in modern football. Exeter were given a free kick 40 yards out by the touch-line on the right hand side, for a foul on Rees. Glen Wilson took the kick, and the ball floated right into the goal, over the searching head of Carter and the grasping hands of the Crewe goalkeeper. Exeter's defence was shaky in the early stages but improved as the game went on. The easiest chance was missed by Blue, and the most unlucky player was Carter, when his header hit the upright and the rebound was put wide by Blue.
