Exeter City, beaten by five goals to two, were even more thoroughly trounced by Mansfield, for the second time in less than a month, than the score suggests in the League Cup game on Monday. And they really had no-one but themselves to blame for the fact that they were so badly outplayed for most of the 90 minutes. Mansfield snapped up an early lead, but the City showing some neat and attractive approach work, were quickly on terms. And had Gordon scored three minutes later, as he should have done, Mansfield could well have had to struggle, but Gordon from almost point-blank range shot straight at Wyllie. And Mansfield, even when leading by 5 to 1, still found the City's front line something of a problem. In the closing minutes Gordon crashed the ball against a post, and then laid on an easy goal for Blue. Apart from one appalling miss in the first half Blue led the City attack very well.
