A goal down in 28 minutes, level by half-time, then all over the opposition but unable to score again, that was Exeter City as they drew with Southport, and the St James's Park habituees went home disappointed. It was the first home point the Grecians have dropped this season, but they should not be blamed for losing it. Southport should be praised for the way their defence held out. Southport scored when Eric Jones's pass completely split the City defence and Blain ran on to it to crack the ball past Alan Jones and into the net off the upright. But right from the start the City had played good football. After the goal against them they kept it up, increased the pressure and after two shots by Carter and one by Rees had narrowly missed the equalising goal, a header by Carter from Jenkins's centre in the 39th minute was only justice. Many shots were sent in by Blue and his fellow forwards but that second goal just would not come.
