Hartlepools (h)

And in the Exeter and District League
Exmouth Town (a)

WORST HOME DISPLAY OF THE SEASON BY EXETER CITY. SHAKY DEFENCE MUST TAKE MOST OF THE BLAME.

Saturday October 7th 1961.

EXETER CITY 1 (Welsh)
HARTLEPOOLS UNITED 1 (Edgar)

Played at St James's Park, attendance 4,173.

Exeter City:- Jones; Hudson and MacDonald; Wilson, Harvey, and Sullivan; Welsh, Gordon, Blue, Carter, and Jenkins.

Hartlepools United:- Wilkinson; Waugh and Bilcliff; Lackenby, Wilkie, and Cain; aJohnson, Edgar, Folland, Parkes, and Godbold.

Referee:- Mr C.W.Kingston of Newport.

Linesmen: Messrs P.J.Woodland and H.G.Stennett.

In their worst display at home this season, in which Hartlepools United were allowed to take the lead and then hang on for a draw, the City's shaky defence must take most of the blame.

Hartlepools, without an away win this season, scored first, in the third minute. Exeter equalised seven minutes before half time. There were occasional flashes of good football by Exeter, but the forwards could not be blamed for failing to score, because they got such poor service from the men behind them. Sometimes the forwards did fail in front of goal, but at other times they have missed a lot more chances than this and won. They can just be thankful that the finishing of Hartlepools was even poorer than their own.

With Arnold Mitchell as skipper and right-half the City Reserves had their full complement of professionals when they visited Exmouth Town today. Result: Exmouth Town 1 City Reserves 1.
