Match 16
October 11th 1961.
Workington (h)

COULD THIS BE THE SAME EXETER CITY? SLOW AND CARELESS ON SATURDAY FAST AND DIRECT TODAY.

Wednesday October 11th 1961.

EXETER CITY 3 (Gordon, Carter 2) WORKINGTON 1 (Kirkup)

Played at St James's Park, attendance 4,301.

Exeter City:- Jones; Hudson and MacDonald; Hughes, Harvey, and Sullivan; Welsh, Gordon, Blue, Carter, and Jenkins.

Workington:- Wright; Wilson and Brown; Hinchcliffe, Tennant, and Burkinshaw; Timmins, Haasz, McGarry, Currie, and Kirkup.

Referee:- Mr L.Callaghan of Merthyr. Linesmen:- Messrs B.H.Watts and R. Prichard.

It seems impossible that the Exeter City side which beat Workington in this match at St James's Park was almost the same as that which dragged out a 1-1 draw there with Hartlepools only four days ago. There was only one change in the line-up, Hughes coming in for the player-manager at right half, yet eleven changes could not have worked a bigger miracle. The side which was slow and careless on Saturday was fast and direct today, where they had been fiddling aimlessly in the forward line, they were full of pace and punch, where they had been dithering in the defence they were tackling strongly and covering well. The result was an exact reversal of the score by which Exeter lost at Workington only last week, and it was also a considerable boost in the eyes of everyone. MacDonald captained the team.
