EXETER CITY LACK PUNCH AND FAIL TO SCORE. ONE GOAL DECIDES: DARLINGTON ARE DESERVING WINNERS.

Saturday October 14th 1961.

DARLINGTON 1 (Martin)
EXETER CITY 0

Played at Feethams, attendance 5,462.

Darlington:- Hunter; Henderson and Mulholland; Robson, Greener, and Furphy; Maltby, Windross, Carr, Luke, and Martin.

Exeter City:- Jones; Hudson and MacDonald; Hughes, Harvey, and Sullivan; Welsh, Gordon, Blue, Carter, and Jenkins.

Referee:- Mr L.J.Tire buck of Halifax.

In a scrappy game at Darlington this afternoon the City were beaten by a goal, scored by Martin three minutes from the interval, to nil. Exeter City have only themselves to blame for this defeat. They had their fair share of territorial advantage, but their forwards, after neat approach work, lacked punch in front of goal, and on the few occasions that they did get the better of the Quakers' defence they found their old goalkeeper, George Hunter, who returned to League football last June when he signed for Darlington after a spell with Yiewsley, quite able to deal with anything that came his way. And Gordon was the only man to shine in an otherwise weak attack. At the other end of the field Jones, by far the busier goalkeeper, brought off several fine saves but stood no chance with the raking drive that beat him. This came after a sustained bout of pressure by the home side, who were fully worthy of their narrow victory.
