Oldham Athletic (a)
Devon Youth v Dorset Youth
At St James’s Park
CITY GRAB A POINT AFTER MISSING PENALTY. DEFENSIVE DISPLAY AT OLDHAM.
Saturday October 28th 1961.
OLDHAM ATHLETIC 1 (Johnstone)
EXETER CITY 1 (McMillan)
Played at Boundary Park, attendance 12,491.
Oldham Athletic:- Bollands; Branagan and Scott; Spurdle, Williams, and Jarvis; Bazley, Johnstone, Lister, Liddell, and Colquhoun.
Exeter City:- Jones; Hudson and MacDonald; Hughes, Harvey, and Sullivan; McMillan, Gordon, Blue, Carter, and Jenkins.
Referee:- Mr A.Sparling of Grimsby.
The City returned from Lancashire with a point, but it was hardly the sort of display to enthuse over. In fact they were hardly ever in the game, and for long periods in the second half played a purely defensive role and appeared quite content to prevent any further scoring by Oldham. Jones and his backs played well enough, as did Harvey, and to a lesser extent the wing halves. But it was a match that the Exeter front line would want to forget, quickly. They lacked method, and on the rare occasions they did mount an attack they persisted in long range "kick and hope" shots, where a little more thought and craft in building up their moves would have paid better dividends. After twenty minutes the City had a great chance to level matters, Johnstone having opened Oldham's account 12 minutes earlier, when Williams handled in the penalty area, but Jenkins placed the ball wide from the spot kick.

Devon Youth hold on for 5–4 win
Devon Youth just about deserved to beat Dorset Youth 5-4. but the whole game, played at St. James' Park, Exeter was close. With a little more luck, Dorset could have forced a draw. Devon's 3-0 half-time score flattered them. Dorset played some excellent football, and only a fine performance by Devon goalkeeper Clark prevented them scoring. Dorset had much the better of the second half, which was a real thriller. Draper (3), Dodd, and Rines scored for Devon. Bodger. Hawkins, Ridout, and an own-goal by Monk made up Dorset's total.
