Match 22
8th November 1961
FA Cup 1st Round Replay
Dartford (a)
Wednesday November 8th 1961.
CITY HAD DARTFORD ON THE RUN. BUT FAILED TO CASH IN THROUGH LACK OF FIGHT.
DARTFORD 2 (Fletcher, Taylor)
EXETER CITY 1 (Carter)
Played on the Dartford ground, attendance 6,777.
Dartford:- Bourne; Redmond and Newstead; White, Mabey, and Howells; Pacey, Taylor, Ackerman, Fletcher, and Adams.
Exeter City:- Jones; Hudson and MacDonald; Hughes, Harvey, and Sullivan; McMillan, Rees, Carter, Gordon, and Jenkins.
Referee:- Mr H.G.New.
The same mistake, made twice, has knocked Exeter City out of the Cup for this season. They made it in the first round at St James's Park on Saturday when they let Dartford come back from 1-3 down to a 3-3 draw. And they made it on the Kent club's ground in the replay, only this time it was worse because they finished 1-2 losers. Yet it was such an elementary error, failing to realise when they had the Southern League side well and truly beaten and failing to take advantage of it. For although they gave the City a few shocks in the first half the Dartford side was dog-tired and ready to be pushed under when the second period started. Even when they luckily equalised the goal by Carter in the 54th minute they were still struggling, the impetus from this not being sufficient to carry them forward for more than a few more minutes. The City could have carved their opponents to pieces but only when it was too late did the team all move up to show their fight and force, qualities previously lacking.
