Match 24

Bradford City (h)

CITY LOSE AFTER TAKING THE LEAD. HANDICAPPED BY INJURY TO HUDSON.

Saturday November 18th 1961.

EXETER CITY1 (Carter)
BRADFORD CITY 2 (McCole, Layne)

Played at St James's Park, attendance 4,405.

Exeter City: Jones; Hudson and MacDonald; Hughes, Harvey, and Sullivan; McMillan, Rees, Blue, Carter, and Gordon.

Bradford City:- Downie; Flockett and Storton; Stowell, Lawlor, and Mollat; Webb, Layne, McCole, Harland, and Hockey.

Referee:- Mr G.W.Pullin of Bristol. Linesmen:- Messrs E.G.Dodge and S.A.Hibbs.

Handicapped by injury in the second half, Hudson having been taken off on a stretcher a minute before the interval after being pole axed by a full-blooded drive by McCole, Exeter City lost by 2 goals to one against Bradford City. At the interval the Grecians led by a fourth-minute goal from Ray Carter.

Hudson, who had captained the City against his old club, returned to the field ten minutes after the resumption to play on the right wing with McMillan inside, Rees at right half and Hughes at right back. The City had almost as much of the game as the fast moving Bradford side, more in the first half, and if they had shot for goal on some Occasions when they attempted to dribble through they might have had more success.

Gordon was far from a failure on the left wing, but generally the City attack found Bradford just too tough for them. The hardest job fell to Sullivan, who had to mark "Bronco" Layne, but the old Welsh International generally came out on top.
