Saturday November 25th 1961.
SWINDON TOWN 4 (Hunt 2, Smith 2) EXETER CITY 0
Played at Wiltshire County Ground, attendance 3,000.
Swindon Town:- Beswick; Wollen and Trollope; Morgan, Owen, and Smart; Summerbee, Hunt, Smith, Jackson, and Dobson.
Exeter City:- Tinsley; Hudson and MacDonald; Hughes, Harvey, and Sullivan; McMillan, Gordon, Blue, Carter, and Jenkins.
Referee:- Mr A.L.Mason of Maidstone.
Both goalkeepers, Tinsley for Exeter and Beswick for Swindon, were making their debuts. The Railwaymen netted their first goal in the 38th minute, and got the others in the second half. The carefree nature of the game was evident from the start. After Jenkins had shot high over the Swindon bar when Exeter were having all the play Harvey then saved the City with a goal-line clearance from Smith's shot. Exeter's forwards moved into position well and passed neatly, and Swindon's easy-going defence several times had to snap into last minute action to keep them out. Tinsley showed up very well in the City's goal, although beaten four times, and after saving many shots during the game, capped a fine performance ten minutes from the end when he saved a penalty kick from Hunt.
- Devon Senior Cup:- Exeter City Reserves beat Crediton on the latter's ground by 4-nil in the first round of the Devon Senior Cup.
