Match 32

Gillingham (a)

GILLINGHAM TAKE THREE POINTS FROM EXETER CITY. EXETER THE BETTER SIDE IN RETURN MATCH.

Saturday December 30th 1961.

GILLINGHAM 2 (Hughes penalty, Pulley) EXETER CITY 2 (Carter 2)

The sorry tale of postponements through snow, ice, and rain took a heavy toll on today's Football League fixtures, all but nine being called off. The football pools were declared void. One of the few games played was the one between Gillingham and the City at Priestfield-road, and the return match of the Boxing Day encounter between these sides at St James's Park, which the Kent team won.

Exeter today were the better side and took an early lead through Carter. At half-time they were still in front by this goal. Gillingham equalised with a penalty two minutes after resuming when Hughes beat Tinsley from the spot after Waldock had been brought down when right through the City defence. Gillingham improved and scored a second goal when Pulley converted a centre from Ridley on the opposite wing.
But the City were quick to seize their chances of a breakaway and snapped up the equaliser when Carter steered the ball into the empty net after Simpson had lost possession.

Gillingham:- Simpson; Hunt and Cockburn; Farrall, Hughes, and Proverbs; Ridley, Livesey, Johnston, Waldock, and Pulley.

Exeter City:- Tinsley; Hudson and MacDonald; Mitchell, Harvey, and Sullivan; Welsh, Rees, Brown, Carter, and Gordon.

  • The City attack was led by Alan Brown, their new centre-forward, who was transferred from Brighton & Hove Albion yesterday. Brown, who can also play wing-half, was born at Polegate 24 years ago and has had two and a half seasons with the Brighton club.
