(Davock, Ward, McDonnell)

Played at St James's Park, attendance 4,135.

Referee:- Mr P.Carr of Worcester.

After a week of snow, ice, and slush the ground at St James's Park was declared fit for play, although the surface was greasy. About three tons of sand had been spread over the pitch, mainly in the centre circle and at each goalmouth. Leading by three goals to nil with only fifteen minutes left the City looked like easy winners. Then in a thrilling and amazing scoring spell Stockport netted two goals, Exeter added another, and the visitors got a third. Alan Brown, six feet in height, towered over the rest of the City forwards, making them seem tinier than they are. He appears to have just the right build for the heavy grounds of winter. Brown also scored a brilliant goal, the first of the game. He interpassed with Welsh on the right, and as the ball came back to him a casual and lazy looking swing of his right foot sent it rocketing into the net at express speed. And Exeter City, who already have a Blue centre forward, have now got a Brown one as well. The City's general performance really deserved a better fate than to scrape home with but one goal to spare.
