Saturday January 27th 1962.

CARLISLE UNITED 2 (Stark 2)
EXETER CITY 1 (Carter)

Played at Brunton Park, attendance 4,993.

Carlisle United:- G.Thompson; Neil and Caldwell; Oliphant, Marsden, and R.Thompson; Dagger, Murdock, Stark, Walker, and Brayton.

Exeter City:- Jones; Hudson and MacDonald; Hughes, Harvey, and Sullivan; Gordon, Blue, Brown, Carter, and Jenkins.

Referee:- Mr A.Atherton, of Runcorn.

Although Carlisle are among the Fourth Division promotion hopefulls and the weather and ground conditions were perfect, there was only a small crowd present to welcome the teams. Exeter restored MacDonald, Gordon and Blue to the team, leaving out Whitnall, McMillan, and Welsh. Carlisle were unchanged.

Exeter, facing the sun, were quickly forced on the defensive when the Carlisle forwards moved straight down the field, but pressure was relieved by an infringement in the penalty area. Jones made a brilliant save to prevent Dagger scoring for Carlisle and the City defence was busy again when Brayton had a shot kicked off the goal line. The crowd had a shock when the home goalkeeper dropped the ball at Carter's feet. Carter does not miss those sort of opportunities and in less than no time the ball was in the net. At the half-time interval the City were still in front, but Stark with two goals in the second half, and the last one only a couple of minutes from the end, won Carlisle the points.
