Match 40
February 24th 1962
Hartlepools (a)
SATURDAY 24th FEBRUARY 1962.
CITY GET POINT IN DRAB GAME.
HARTLEPOOL 0 EXETER CITY 0.
This was the worst game of the season at Hartlepool all season, but for Exeter it had a happy ending, the point they collected virtually put paid to any danger of their having to apply for re- electon, It was a game in which the defences took control and the result was 90 minutes of dull football, minimul goalmouth incidents and hardly a thrill to enliven the shivering fans,
As far as Exeter were concerned, these were the right tactics but the home side instead of putting pressure ambled along casually to make City's task comparatively easy. The first half was bad, the second was worse. The number of shots could be counted on one hand but it was City who almost scored in the closing stages, Brown's shot being headed off the line.
It was in defence that Exeter shone, with Mitchell the star player, he was the only one with any constructive ability, he coupled it with some intelligent positional play, Brown was the most effective forward on the field. This was the drabest of games which bored the home crowd,
