Match 44
March 17th 1962.
Oldham Athletic (h)
EXETER CITY
(Carter 3)
OLDHAM ATHLETIC 3
(Lister, Bazley, Dickinson)
SATURDAY 17th MARCH 1962.
CARTER SCORES A HAT TRICK.
This match provided its fair share of excitement, against Oldham Athletic who are fifth in the table, but at the same time they did not look a brilliant side, If City had played the easy way and made space for themselves instead of hiding behind an opponent when the ball was due to come their way, they could have had a convincing win in front of City's smallest crowd of the season,
It was a game that Carter will remember, for he scored all City's three goals. His first in the 34th minute was a typical Carter effort, He soared above the Oldham defence to head home a cross from Mitchell. The second came in the 64th minute with a spectacular overhead kick, he completed his hat trick three minutes later with a low drive through a crowd of players.
Oldham were 2-1 up at half time with goals from Lister in 15 minutes and Bazley five minutes before the interval. They fell behind following Carter's goals, but not for long, for in the 73rd minute Dickenson scored the equaliser, Several City players made far too many mistakes, the costliest was one by Jones, who allowed Bazley's harmless looking centre drop into the net.
