Colchester, lively in attack, crashed through a jittery Exeter defence to take the lead through centre-forward KING, who, unmarked, converted a Bobby Hunt centre.

Exeter replied with some spirited attacks, and inside-left Carter headed a free kick against the Colchester bar. Harris headed away a dangerous header from Carter, who was the brightest the visiting forwards.
