Match 49
April 11th 1962.
York City (h)
EXETER CITY 2 (Welsh, Carter)
YORK CITY 1 (Weir)
WEDNESDAY 11th APRIL 1962.
CITY PUT ON FIRST HALF SIZZLER.
City appeared to play like men inspired for the first 45 minutes, in fact they played the same sort of football as they always have, but they played it à little harder and a little faster and it Gale Off They swept down the pitch time and time again, lashing in shots, putting in headers and Welsh (24 minutes) and Carter (26 minutes) got the goals that were more than due to them,
In the second half it was City who were retreating and making mistakesThey were too slow to the ball or careless with it and York started to get on top. It was no surprise when Weir hit a 50th minute goal. In fact it was a greater surprise that they did not get another, because what had been a runnaway win for City turned into a very tough fight to hold on to what they had,
Even so, considering that York City are fifth in the table and City were fifth from bottom this must rate as a good all round performance, Jenkins hit his best form for some time, with Gordon again the best overall forward. Mitchell and Sullivan were the best of a generally sound defence,
Exeter City:- Tinsley; Hudson and MacDonald; Mitchell, Harvey, and Sullivan; Gordon, Welsh, Blue, Carter, and Jenkins.
York City:- Forgan; Bingley and Heron;
Woods, Jackson, and Hamilton; Gould, Wragg, Stainsby, Rudd, and Weir.
Attendance 2,919.
