Carlisle United:- G.Thompson; Brown and Terris; Cavanagh, Bradley, and R.Thompson; Bevan, Walker, Smith, Fleming, and Morgan.

Linesmen:- Messrs E.G.Dodge and D.G.Jarmin.
A lot of things may have changed at St James's Park since the end of last season, but on the team's showing against Carlisle United the playing performance is pretty much the same. The score, or rather the absence of a score, practically tells its own story, for this was yet another in the string of Division Four games in which the City have made 90 per-cent of the running when facing moderate Northern opposition, but have not secured a win because they have failed in front of goal. And it was another of those games in which right at the end there was just the chance that the Northerners would break away and snatch the vital goal themselves. Exeter City may prove to be a good side this season, but the side, and especially the inside forward trio, needs time to settle down.

Chippenham v Exeter City Reserves
City Reserves Get Harsh Initiation
Exeter City Reserves receivied a rude initiation into Western League football Saturday, when they were soundly beaten 3-0 by a lively Chipper- ham Town side.
It was the first-ever meeting be- tween the two clubs, and Chipper- ham set the pace and stole the honours from the kick-off. In fact, they forced a corner in the first minute, and in the opening stages Kveller only contribution to the excitement was a splendid shot by Rees, equally splendidly saved by Webb. Slow-motion City were no match for their more, enterprising oppo- nents, whose flexibility was potently demonstrated after eleven minutes. Right half Steeds stopped 8 dangerous attack by cleverly inter- cepting a cross pass, and within two seconds M. Beaven had slammed his forward punt into the back of the net.
TOOK COMMAND
For a period the City forwards took command, and all the home team swept back to prevent the equaliser. Cumbersome passing movements and hesitant finishing slowed the attack to a standstill. however, and the opportunity was lost. Six storming minutes at the be- ginning of the second half gave Cheltenham two more goals, both scored by Owens, and from that point Exerer plodded to their first Western League defeat. Occasional openings were made, but the inside-forwards were goal- shy, Bennett setting a bad example with two misses in as many minutes -one over the top, the other wildly wide. Although beaten three times, Lobbett did a good job in goal. earning ready applause for his skill and daring.
