EXETER CITY'S FAILING STILL REMAINS.
GOOD MIDFIELD PLAY OFFSET BY LACK OF FINISH.
Tuesday September 6th 1960.

Played at Belle-vue, attendance 5,121.
Doncaster Rovers:- Nimmo; Makepeace and Curtis; Haigh, Lunn, and Staton; Fernie, Leighton, Chappell, Broadbent, and Walker.
Exeter City:- Lobbett; Whitnall and MacDonald; Mitchell, Harvey, and Thompson; Harrison, Rees, Bennett, Wilkinson, and Dale.
Referee: Mr A.W.Sparling of Grimsby.
Doncaster Rovers had a tremendous fight on their hands to secure their first victory of the season, and Exeter came very near to gaining the spoils. Indeed, the City deserved at least a point, and they might have won both if their attack had known how to apply finish to impressive mid-field play. When Leighton scored his second goal, in the 44th minute, the home team, for reasons best known to themselves, decided, and wrongly, that defence was the best form of attack, and at the time when it was vitally necessary for them to make an all-out effort to add to their slender lead of 2-1 to make victory certain. The crowd therefore had to watch the sorry spectacle of no fewer than three home forwards in their own penalty area trying to stem the continuous City attacks which often built up from the full back positions. It was touch and go till the end but once again Exeter lost the points through their inability to finish.

'SHOWBIZ XI' PUT UP FINE SHOW
3010 people paid to watch the "Showbiz XI" get beaten 5-4 by Bedford Jezzard's team at St. James's Park last night. The match was in aid of funds for St. Loyes College Building Extension Fund.
The teenagers and the female fans came to see the stars of stage, TV, and radio; the elder people came mainly to see Exeter's City's old "stars"-for there were seven of them playing and football personalities like Billy Wright. Wally Barnes, and Joe Bacuzzi.
They all saw a sporting, entertaining game, with more goals than anyone has seen before at St. James's Park this season. It was obvious that apart from just playing in charity games, most of the Showbiz side were accomplished footballers anyway. As for the ex-City men. and the Bedford Jezzard XI in general. they were all retired professionals, but though they were short on speed they still weren't short of skill. Billy Wright was also the favourite of the youngsters, and the biggest cheer of the evening went up as he scored from a penalty for "hands."
Bill Harrower (2), Angus Mackay (2), and Billy Dunlop scored for Bedford Jezzard's XI; Franklyn Boyd (2), Paddy Sloane, and Billy Wright replied.
