A BRIGHT GAME BUT NO GOALS.
EXETER CITY GET THEIR FIRST AWAY POINT.

Saturday September 10th 1960.

STOCKPORT COUNTY 0
EXETER CITY 0

Played at Edgeley Park, attendance 8,035.

Stockport County:- Lee; Ashdown and Porteous; Bennion, Hodder, and Holland;
Wilson, Anderson, Fletcher, Murdock, and Davock.

Exeter City:- Lobbett; Whitnall and MacDonald; Mitchell, Harvey, and Thompson; Harrison, Gordon, Wilkinson, Donaldson, and Rees.

Referee:- Mr A.W.Luty of Leeds.

Both sides missed their goal-scoring chances in a bright game at Stockport today, when Exeter City earned their first away point. John Lobbett did some very good work in the visitors' goal, and was his side's hero. Exeter's young custodian, whose form varies between the brilliant and the terrible, has not the consistency to stand anything like a favourable comparison with some of Exeter's great goalkeepers of the past, Hunter, Singleton, Kelly, Davies, and Dick Pym, but on his day he handles the ball like a master, and takes complete control of the goal area. Today was one of those days. There were scoring chances for both sides, but none were taken in an otherwise bright exhibition of soccer, played on a lovely September afternoon on a perfect pitch and before a considerably larger crowd than usual for the Stockport ground.

Exeter City Reserves v Bath City

CITY RESERVES UNLUCKY TO LOSE

BATH SCORE BREAKAWAY GOALS

By TONY COURT (Express and Echo 10/9/60)

EXETER CITY RESERVES had five amateurs in their team to play Bath City Reserves for Western League points at St. James's Park this afternoon.

Exeter City: Jones; K. Parsons, Tucker; Peter Williams, Alvin Williams, Grant: A. Chown, D. Symes, Bennett, P. Sokell, T. Irons.

Bath City: Groves; Skuse, Mogg; Brown, Grace, Brazier; Thomas, Milsom, Codd. Wait. Brain.

Referee: E. F. Ley. Barnstaple.

The young City side started by playing high-speed football in the sun, and looked as if they could tear the Bath team to shreds if they kept going. It was obvious that Peter Bennett, as the only experienced forward. was going to have to work hard, and there was no one to meet the first ball that he pulled back across the goalmouth. The first two shots of the game came from Peter Williams-and both were wide; but at the other end Alan Jones had had nothing to do for the first 15 minutes

Then Peter Bennett had two shots, both from Peter Williams' passes. The first was easily held by Groves, and the second scorched across the face of the goal and out of play.

FRACTION TOO SLOW
A well-taken Chown corner drew Groves right out, but the Reserves' attack was a fraction too slow to take their chance. Inexperience cost them another goal chance when Groves was drawn right out again-and Sokell came in just too late to nod the ball into an empty net. Bennett chased a long ball to win the Reserves another corner-but Terry Irons hit it behind. Sokell was unlucky with a long shot: Peter Williams blasted a free Kick well over; then Peter Bennett missed his first real chance as he completely mistimed a goalmouth cross. But Bennett made an even better chance for Irons a few minutes later -and the little winger tried to chip the ball over Groves's head, but sent it yarde over from very close range.

BREAKAWAY GOAL
Then in Bath's first real break- away for 15 minutes they scored. Codd ran out to the right in the 29th minute and hit the ball hard and low across City's goal for WAIT to run on to and hit past Jones from two yards out. And so it went on until half-time. with the Reserves playing football that was quite good to watch, and getting themselves back in control of the game-but not getting the goals. Peter Bennett was extremely unlucky when he got his head to a good Chown cross and flicked it just a foot wide. Bath were certainly being pushed hard, and Mogg was glad to nod an Irons cross out of the way over his own bar.

Half-time :-
CITY RESERVES 0-1 BATH RESERVES

City Reserves started the second half with an attack that ended in Bennett nodding a Chown cross into Grove's hands; but then Bath broke straight away for Milsom to shoot wide and Brain to mis-kick right in front of goal. Chown was playing very well, and it was from another of his crosses that Bennett turned the ball a yard wide. Then Chown tried a shot himself, but it too was wide. Next it was Bennett who moved out to the wing and crossed a ball which Sokell headed into Grove's arms. Then Bennett missed a Peter Williams' cross by a fraction-and Bath were still getting the run- around. Again Bath had a stroke of sheer luck and scored in a breakaway. Milsom ran down the centre after a long ball in the 65th minute, and though Jones dived he could only de- flect the ball out to CODD, who smashed it in on the run.

YET ANOTHER
Five minutes later, Bath scored again, with another CODD goal, this time as the centre-forward ran through on to a low cross from the right. Following another series of City attacks that failed, Codd almost got his hat-trick. This time though he ran through and shot a foot wide. Finally the Reserves got a well- deserved goal. Peter Williams slipped Sokell through in the 83rd minute, and SOKELL scored with a neat chip over Groves's head.

Result :-
EXETER CITY RESERVES 1-3 BATH CITY
