PETERBOROUGH BEAT EXETER WITH LAST MINUTE GOAL. GRAND ENTERTAINMENT AND SEVEN GOALS AT THE PARK.

Saturday September 24th 1960.

EXETER CITY 3 (Wilson, Wilkinson 2) PETERBOROUGH UNITED 4 (Bly 3, Hails)

Played at St James's Park, attendance 7,000.

Exeter City:- Lobbett; Whitnall and MacDonald; Wilson, Harvey, and Thompson; Rees, Donaldson, Wilkinson, Gordon, and Harrison.

Peterborough United:- Walls; Stafford and Walker; Raynor, Rigby, and Ripley; Hails, Emery, Bly, Smith, and Sheavills.

Referee:- Mr R.E. Smith of Newport.

Exeter City were unlucky today in what was easily the best match seen at the Park this season for entertainment, excitement, and goals.

After taking the lead, losing it, and equalising again they went down by the odd goal of seven in almost the last minute when Bly scrambled the ball through in the goalmouth to complete his "hat trick."

After Rees had shot wide Wilson gave Exeter the lead in the fifth minute with a glorious 30 yards' drive that rocketed past Walls into the top corner of the net at the St James's Road end. After Bly had scored twice for Peterborough Wilkinson got a goal for the City, and at half-time the sides were on level pegging at 2 goals each. Peterborough, who came into the Football League this season in the place of Gateshead, are going great guns, and now lie second to Northampton, their neighbours.

WELTON IN FINE FORM

Welton Rovers 9: Exeter Res. 0
(Published in The Somerset Guardian 30/9/60)

Those who had any doubts about Welton Rovers ability to hold their own among the top teams in the Western League undoubtedly had them dispelled at West Clewes on Saturday when the home team recorded their fifth suc- cessive victory. It was first-rate soccer-not so one- sided as the score suggests with the Rovers "streets ahead" of their professional opponents. and far more accurate with their shooting. All but one of the forwards took part in this goal-scoring spree with Eddie Attwood and Brian Barker each getting a "hat- trick

During the first 10 minutes the teams appeared so evenly matched that no enthusiast could possibly have predicted such a "slaughter" for the City. Goals by BARKER in the 10th and 18th minutes "took the stuffing out of the visitors. who never again appeared likely even to check the fast- running "tide."

Before the interval SIMMONS and ATTWOOD added further Welton goals. and. in a three-minute period soon after the re-start these two players scored again to push the score to 6-0. It is true that Jones, in the Exeter goal, could be faulted for two of the Weton goals. but he was not the only offender in an Exeter defence which was pierced at will by the devastating Welton attackers. At Intervals Exeter developed some good raids and there were occasions when they were unlucky not to score while in the home goal Webber gained a good deal of credit with some brilliant saves.

Bennett worked hard as leader of the Exeter attack but the line lacked cohesion and the Rovers remained the masters adding further goals through CURTIS BARKER and ATTWOOD to the delight of their supporters.
